The ceremonial cutting of the first steel for Costa Toscana provided the ideal opportunity to check how the construction of Costa Smeralda is going. Hundreds of workers at the Meyer Turku yard are currently busy working on what will be an amazing ode to Italy’s Finest.
There’s still plenty of final touches to be added before Costa Cruises‘ new flagship sets sail later this year, but when she does she will take her guests on a journey through Italy that will be unique in terms of innovative design and on-board services. Costa Smeralda‘s interior will pay tribute to the many things about Italy that people around the world love and appreciate.
Lots of areas onboard Costa’s new flagship will be devoted to fun, flavours and festivity. The Piazza di Spagna, a large stairway on three decks at the back of the ship will be the ideal place to entertain guests of all ages. The glass floor of the open-air balcony on the top deck will give the impression of flying over the sea.
The (as good as finished) comfortable and elegant accommodations onboard Costa Smeralda exude Italian taste and style. The cabins are designed and decorated with the colours and the geometric patterns of the city that each deck is named after, making them welcoming and cosy.
Costa Smeralda is also introducing a new category of rooms to the fleet. The new staterooms with a “terrace over the sea” feature an annex where guests can enjoy breakfast, sip on an aperitif, or simply enjoy the scenery and sound of the waves.
Costa Smeralda will be a feast for the eyes but also a feast for the taste buds. She will offer no less than eleven restaurants and 19 bars.

Costa Smeralda would of course not be complete without one of the jewels in Costa Cruises’ crown: the spa! With a beauty salon, hammam, thalassotherapy pool, 16 treatment rooms and snow, salt and relaxation rooms it will be a true wellness paradise at sea. Guests who want to stay in shape can use the gym and multi-sports pitch with sea view.
For guests looking to relax and enjoy the sun, the ship will feature four swimming pools, including one pool with a roof and two kids pools, and one reserved swimming pool deck. The outside fun continues at the water park with its slides, and inside at the theatre, disco, casino, jazz club piano bar, the games room and in the special kids areas.
Costa Smeralda is scheduled to embark on a 15-day vernissage cruise on 20 October 2019. The voyage to Savona will include two-day stops in Hamburg, Rotterdam, Lisbon, Barcelona and Marseille. She will officially be named in Savona on November 3, 2019
