Driving along I-75 between Tampa and Fort Lauderdale we decided to make an impromptu stop along the way. We opened our smartphone and used an app to select a random location and hotel. Not knowing where we would end up we followed the directions towards Punta Gorda and the Wyvern Hotel.
Located close to the Peace River, the Art Deco style Wyvern Hotel offers 63 luxury rooms offering all the modern comforts and necessities. Or as the hotel describes itself “Where Modern Simplicity meets Luxurious elegance”.
We stayed in room 403 which is a room for guests with disabilities. This meant that the room had a slightly altered layout for easier access and a bathroom with roll-in shower and extra grab bars. We were more than happy with this because it meant there was more room to move arround the room and we had a truly walk in-shower.
The room itself has an iPod docking station, a coffee machine, a minibar, an electronic safe, a large flat screen TV and most importantly a super comfortable bed.
Eventhough we used a lastminute deal to book the hotel we got a room facing the river and the bridges crossing the river to Charlotte Harbor.
I’m not sure if the fact that the (bath)room is wheelchair accessible has anything to do with it, but the marble bathroom is one of the biggest we have seen in hotels.
Part from the plush bathrobes and towels the hotel offers a wonderful selection of deluxe bathroom amenities.
The absolute highlights of the Wyvern hotel are the rooftop pool and lounge overlooking downtown Punta Gorda, the Peace River and Charlotte Harbor.
We normally spend quite some time checking out hotels before making a reservation, and in most cases stick with a chain hotel. This time we didn’t and just picked one of the options the app on our phone suggested. From the moment we saw the front of the hotel and entered the lobby we knew we had come to the right place and we would not be disappointed. Though our night at the Wyvern Hotel was a last minute decision it will definitely be a stop on a future visit to the Gulf Coast.
